Antibiotic Resistance

Educational film for the department of health

Fig.01. — One of the greatest threats to world health

i. Project Background
“What happens when antibiotics lose their effectiveness in the battle against infection?"‍

Dinamo tasked us with interpreting a script for Helsedirektoratet (Norwegian Directorate of Health) to illustrate exactly this question. Dinamo wrote the script and I conceptualized, designed, illustrated and animated this film to be shown as part of a larger campaign to inform and educate the public on the potential dangers of the over-use and over prescription of antibiotics.

ii. Process & Result
Inspired by a combination of vintage school textbook illustrations and electron microscope images of viruses, I adapted the aesthetic to feel timeless, familiar and tactile, whilst maintaining a strong focus on the factual content, underlining both the seriousness of the message and the authenticity of the information.

The resulting film packs a lot of information into its effective runtime and aims to tackle a serious subject with elegant transitions and a visual flow that helps keep the story coherent, engaging, and emotionally resonant throughout.

The film was an effective tool for Helsedirektoratet to communicate this important message, and remains in use and as relevant now as when it was produced. The project went on to recieve great praise in the design industry, winning gold and being nominated for ‘best in show’ at Visuelt 2017 as well as being nominated in the European design awards the same year.

iii. Praise for the film
  •                        "‍...a film that engages right up to the final frame, with a beautiful color palette, strong storyboard, animation, and a keen eye for detail… a small work of art about a serious subject."‍
